Electronic Placemat
A Sketching Application for Paper-and-Pencil Games

Autumn 2003 - Spring 2004
Advised by Dr. Richard Anderson, UW

Proposal (PDF)

I have found that most research on pen-based computing has ignored applications for children and has focused primarily on office and school activities for adults. The Electronic Placemat expands the research to include children's games. The Electronic Placemat is intended to support play of various pen-and-paper games, such as tic-tac-toe, dots-and-boxes, and hangman, on a pen-based computer.

The user interface will be a blank screen so user interactions will be modeled after pen and paper, with the computer providing support for user actions.

Eventually, I envision the Electronic Placemat will provide support for children's educational activities, such as practicing handwriting, sketching, and storytelling.

This is a year-long project that started in October of 2003.
