WACAS logo
Designing a logo for a new service

Spring 2001

While I was working as a webmaster for the UW Office of Undergraduate Admissions (UGA), the office created a Web-based tool for students planning to transfer to the UW. The name of the tool is WACAS (Washington Course Applicability System). My supervisor asked me to create a logo to be used in the web site and on brochures.

The logo is still used today in the WACAS web site. The logo was also used for a postcard/brochure.

Below are the stages of the design of the logo:

  1. The final logo design started out as a 1" x 1" pencil sketch. The stairs metaphor was used because WACAS serves as steps for students who want to transfer to the UW.
  2. I traced the logo in an image editor and I added a square as a background. The color scheme used is from the color scheme of UGA's web site for transfer students.
  3. This is the final version of the logo. Notice that the side of the stairs has been darkened to make the stairs look more three-dimensional.
